This is especially true when it comes to food that sugar added to it. As we all know, 'people' icing is usually loaded with sugar or, in the case of this site, sugar alternatives.
Pupcakes! (dog Cupcakes With
This recipe for dog cookie icing was a really popular one as well! However, this cream cheese based icing works best on cakes or cupcakes made for our pets. The cream cheese based icing is more of a thick icing that is meant to be served moist. Would you want a hard frosting on your cake or a moist buttercream one?
Rice flour or potato flour should work although you may need to add a bit extra for hardening. Tapioca Starch and Arrowroot Starch are two other possible alternatives for you to try as well.
Check out my whole wheat peanut butter and honey dog biscuit recipe. Here are some really cool cookies cutters for dog cookies. Lastly, if you are thinking of using sprinkles on top of your dog cookies, it is imperative that you avoid anything with Xylitol in it. Certain other ingredients may be less harmful in small amounts. Certainly, you can check with your veterinarian if you have any concerns. Do not add chocolate to this recipe for dog icing.
Pumpkin Banana Pupcake
I have several great recipes for chocolate frosting and icing on this site. Those recipes are for people. Chocolate is a favorite ingredient for use to use in our frosting.
Because we like our chocolate, it can seem to be a tasty idea to make an icing made with chocolate for our pups.
However, as a warning to you, chocolate contains caffeine, theobromine, phenylethylamine, and fromamide. I do not know much about these ingredients but, I have heard that in certain quantities that can make a dog very sick. I would never want this to happen on my watch.

As mentioned, we will be using corn starch for this recipe. Cornstarch is a thickener that helps this harden. There are a few alternatives to cornstarch that can be subbed in for a recipe such as this one. Rice flour or potato flour should work although you may need to add a bit extra for hardening. Tapioca Starch and Arrowroot Starch are two other possible alternatives for you to try as well.
Specific sugar alternatives are not given in the recipes presented on this site. Only suggestions are given as to the 'kind' of alternative to use. It is up to you to select the alternative to use that suits your needs best. If the recipe is heated or cooked, it is best to use an alternative that can be heated or cooked with for best results. Probably yes since are here. I like these mixing bowls and use them all of the time. Check out that nonslip bottom. Totally worth the money as it can save you many a mess.

A non-stick three tier cooling rack. This is an amazing space saving idea that I know I need all of the time. You know how all of that holiday baking goes when you have batches of cookies that need to get cooled at the same time.

Unfortunately, the one thing I haven’t been able to do very well is make them look pretty.

Making them look pretty starts with a dog-friendly icing. I’ve always seen the boutique styled dog stores sell the cutest treats and wondered how they achieved such a consistent formula. And while I may not have it exactly right, I found an easy way for anyone to make colorful icing for their dog treats!

Because I want to feed this to my pups, it needs to be sugar free and as basic as possible. The three ingredients needed are yogurt (duh!) milk, and tapioca starch. Tapioca starch (or tapioca flour) is a gluten-free option that has increasingly become more popular. It is the perfect substitute for flour in any recipe, especially ones you will be feeding to your dogs. And at only $8.00 it’s hard to beat!
Mini Dog Birthday Cake
If you want a plain white colored icing you can stop here. If you want to add a little color, aka fun, to your treats just add in some food coloring to create something special.
The best thing about this icing recipe is that you can customize it to your preferred preferences. If you want an icing that is harder and thicker you would use more tapioca starch. If you want something a little more shiny and “wet” looking, you add less.
When I made the super cute flamingo and pineapple treats for Keela’s birthday, I made WAY to much icing. It was my first time and I had no idea it would make so much and because dog treats are typically much smaller than any other dessert, a little goes a long way. Just be mindful of what you are wanting to accomplish and do a little at a time and you’ll be fine!
Easy Roll Out Peanut Butter Dog Cookies • The Boop
I will say that my yellow looks a little depressing – and that’s because I accidentally added the wrong food color to it and had to improvise as best as possible. (whoops!) Normally the yellow is much brighter.
I had so much fun creating these. I used a few random cookie cutters that I had on hand like the dog bone, a bowtie, and a flamingo and pineapple set. You can see I made circles out of some of the scrap pieces and mixed the icing colors together for a marbleized look. Seriously, the options are endless!

The icing is also so easy to work with. I used a spoon, a straw, and my fingers and was able to form it exactly how I wanted it. I’m sure someone with culinary skills could make these look 10x better but I am very happy with the results!

Place the yogurt and tapioca starch in a mixing bowl. Mix until you achieve a creamy texture. Add in milk slowly and mix until thoroughly combined. Mixture may get hard but just keep stirring until you get the consistency of icing. Add more or less tapioca starch to get desired consistency. Add in food coloring (optional). Decorate treats and refrigerate to harden. (the longer in the fridge the better!)
And there you have it. It’s super easy to create treat icing for your fur babies and there friends. It’s not only cute, but very fun too!
