Avocado Recipes For 2 Year Old

Avocado Recipes For 2 Year Old

The avocado is having a moment. Actually, it feels like more than just a moment, since the Hass avocado has been a feature of cafe menus and Instagram feeds for a number of years now. It appears as though the waning “fat free” craze  of decades past has made room for this versatile food, loaded with healthy fats and other nutrients. And while avocados are certainly popular with grown ups, they’re also ideal for little ones. Here are 4 avocado recipes for babies and toddlers.

Up until a few years ago, I mostly served avocados sliced over tacos or mashed into guacamole. These days, though, they’ve found their way into so much more of my cooking, from creamy fruit smoothies to myriad iterations of avocado toast. And while all three of my girls are fans, I wish I’d used avocados more extensively when the kids were small, since they’re such a healthy choice for little ones (as well as their breastfeeding mamas).

Ultimate

Avocados are a terrific choice when babies are starting on solids. A nutrient-dense fruit, the Hass avocado is rich in folate, potassium, fiber, and monounsaturated fatty acids, all important for a baby’s development. They are a practical option too, considering how easy it is to blend one into a puree, no cooking required. For toddlers, avocados make good sense as well, in part because they are an ideal first “finger food” when cut up into bite-size cubes. Since many kids take slowly to strong tastes, the mild flavor and creamy texture of avocados make them suitable for young eaters of every age.

Easy Homemade Guacamole (our Favorite)

Below you’ll find 4 Easy Avocado Recipes for Babies and Toddlers, starting with a “first foods” puree and progressing to little meals that toddlers (and parents) can enjoy. If you have favorite ways to prep avocados for your kids, I’d love to hear, so please share in the comments section below. You can also find more recipes for homemade baby food and kid-friendly meals by heading on over here. And for tips on how to cut a Hass avocado, you’ll find that here

A creamy baby puree with healthy fats from the avocado and a bit of sweetness from the mango. If not serving right away, lay a piece of plastic wrap over the surface to prevent browning.

Put the flesh of the avocado and mango into the bowl of a mini food processor and process until smooth. If you need a little more liquid, add breast milk or formula by the teaspoon until it reaches the desired consistency. Transfer to a small bowl.

Apple And Avocado Puree For Baby

Guacamole pared down to the most basic ingredients. If you are sharing this with your little one, feel free to add a pinch or two of salt to bump up the flavor.

Cut the avocado in halve lengthwise and discard the pit. Use a large spoon to scoop the flesh from the peel and put it in a medium bowl. Add the cumin and lime juice and use a fork to smash the ingredients together until fairly smooth.

Feed it to little ones with a spoon. For toddlers and older kids, enjoy it as a healthy dip with veggies or crackers.

Green Pancakes With Spinach & Avocado (blw & Toddler Friendly)

A simple salad that is just as tasty for grown ups as it is for kids. Toddlers can work on their fine motor skills learning to pick up all the fixings with their fingers. Older kids and parents can enjoy it as a salad, spooned onto tortillas, or scooped up with tortilla chips.

Cut the avocado in half lengthwise. Discard the pit. Scoop the flesh from the peel using a large spoon and cut into cubes. Add to the bowl and stir gently to combine.

An avocado toast that is custom made for toddlers. While you’re at it, prepare an extra slice for yourself, embellishing it with favorite seasonings and slicing it in half instead of into bite-size pieces.

How To Freeze Avocados

Toast the bread. Lay the flesh of the avocado on the toast and use the tines of a fork to smash it onto the bread. Squeeze a few drops of lemon juice onto the avocado, followed by a little pinch of salt. Cut into toddler-sized bites.

Avocado is a great first food and can be offered to babies as soon as they’re ready to start solids, usually around 6 months.

It’s important to remember that your baby is unique and that rather than going by the calendar, you need to make sure your baby is DEVELOPMENTALLY ready to start solids.

Avocado

: You may already know that avocado is a fruit, not a vegetable. But did you know that it is actually a berry?

Avocado is one of the best first foods for babies. It's an excellent source of fiber, which aids in digestion, and healthy fat, which is essential for supporting their rapidly growing brains!

Chicken Avocado Pasta (date Night Edition!)

Serving avocado alongside foods that are rich in fat-soluble vitamins (vitamins A, D, E, K), like carrots and sweet potatoes, can really increase the absorption of these nutrients.

This nutritious fruit is also a good source of vitamins C, E, B6, as well as zinc which all help strengthen the immune system.

First, you want to check the peel and make sure there are no large indentations. Then, gently press down around the stem (not the sides, to avoid bruising it). If it gives slightly but retains its shape, then it is ripe. If it leaves a dent or feels mushy, then it's overripe.

Firm, unripe avocados will take about 4-5 days to ripen at room temperature. You want to check them daily to make sure they don't ripen too quickly. The temperature of your kitchen plays a role in this.

But if you need them to ripen faster, place the avocados in a brown paper bag along with a banana or apple.

You will know if your avocado has gone bad by smell or if it gets super mushy. If more than a third of the fruit is brown, then toss it. Otherwise, you can scoop out the brown spots and enjoy the rest.

Cut avocado into thick spears. Due to its creamy texture, they can be quite slippery. To make it easier to grip, you can leave some of the peel on or roll them in hemp seeds, finely ground nuts, shredded coconut, or fortified infant cereal.

Once your baby develops their pincer grasp and is able to pick up smaller pieces of food, you can cut into bite-sized pieces.

You can! And if you're now wondering how much, I want to encourage you. Rather than getting too caught up on the exact serving or portion sizes per day, aim for balance and variety in the foods you serve. Too much of any food, even the so-called super foods can be bad if consumed in excess.

The best way to freeze avocado is to mash with some lemon juice. Transfer to ice cube tray or single serve freezer trays and freeze for up to 1 month. To thaw, simply thaw in the refrigerator overnight.
